Help TSunami Victims
Tsunami wave, which hit India for the first time wreaking havoc across the southern
coastline, is a known phenomenon in the Pacific Ocean region stretching from Chile in Latin America to Japan in far east Asia.
A tsunami is not a tidal wave, but is caused by a massive jolt to the seabed. It is a
chain of waves that travels at the speed of 500 km per hour, as fast as a jet airplane. The waves do not affect ships in the deep seas. Their impact is felt in shallow waters and on-shore where they gain in magnitude.
The tsunami that hit coastal India was devastating because the earthquake that
triggered it off measured 8.9 on the Richter scale."If this earthquake had hit land it would have caused complete destruction," said B Lal, ADG, Indian Met Department.
A tsunami cannot be predicted, only monitored. Japan is one of the few countries that
has the technology to forecast a tsunami, as the islands fall within the ring of fire area prone to earthquakes below or near ocean floors. This is the first time India has had to face a tsunami, and Sunday's incident only intensifies the need for a system that can monitor such occurrences.
